Prophet Muhammad’s Supplication for Memorizing the Quran

Memorizing the Quran is a great blessing, and many seek ways to strengthen their retention. A well-known supplication attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is often recited for this purpose. However, scholars like Imam Al-Dhahabi and Ibn Al-Jawzi have classified the narration as weak or fabricated. Despite this, it carries beautiful meanings and can be used as a general supplication for seeking Allah’s guidance and help in memorization. Here is the dua:

Transliteration:

Allāhumma arḥamnī bitark al-ma‘āṣī abadan mā abqaytanī, warzuqnī ḥusn an-naẓar fīmā yurḍīka ‘annī.
Allāhumma Badī‘ as-samāwāti wa-al-arḍ, Dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrām, wa-al-‘izzah allātī lā turām, as’aluka yā Allāh, yā Raḥmān, bijalālika wa-nūri wajhika, an tulzima qalbī ḥifẓ Kitābika kamā ‘allamtanī, warzuqnī an atlūhu ‘alā al-wajhi alladhī yurḍīka ‘annī.
Allāhumma Badī‘ as-samāwāti wa-al-arḍ, Dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrām, wa-al-‘izzah allātī lā turām, as’aluka yā Allāh, yā Raḥmān, bijalālika wa-nūri wajhika, an tunawwira b-Kitābika baṣarī, wa-an tutliq bihi lisānī, wa-an tufarrija bihi ‘an qalbī, wa-an tashraḥ bihi ṣadrī, wa-an tasta‘mila bihi badanī, fa-innahū lā yu‘īnūnī ‘alā al-ḥaqq ghayruka, wa-lā yu’tīnihi illā anta, wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā billāh al-‘Aliyy al-‘Aẓīm.

English Translation:

“O Allah, have mercy on me by keeping me away from sins for as long as You keep me alive, and grant me the ability to focus on what pleases You. O Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of Majesty and Honor, the One whose Might cannot be challenged, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your Majesty and the Light of Your Face, to bind my heart to the memorization of Your Book as You have taught me, and bless me with the ability to recite it in a manner that pleases You.

O Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of Majesty and Honor, the One whose Might cannot be challenged, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your Majesty and the Light of Your Face, to enlighten my sight with Your Book, to make my tongue fluent with it, to relieve my heart with it, to expand my chest with it, and to make my body act upon it. For indeed, none can help me upon the truth except You, and none can grant me success except You. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.”

Whether or not one chooses to recite this specific dua, the key to Quran memorization lies in sincerity, consistency, and seeking divine assistance. Making dua, avoiding distractions, and practicing regular revision help strengthen retention. Above all, relying on Allah and asking for His guidance remains essential in this noble journey. May Allah bless all those striving to memorize His words and make the Quran a source of guidance and light in their lives. Ameen.

Background of the Dua

This supplication is attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who is said to have taught it to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) after he complained of forgetting Quranic verses. It is mentioned in some narrations that the Prophet advised Ali to pray a special Salah on Friday and then recite this dua. However, Islamic scholars, including Al-Dhahabi and Ibn Al-Jawzi, have classified this narration as weak or fabricated.

While the authenticity of the dua is debated, its meanings remain profound and beneficial. Asking Allah for assistance in memorization, focus, and enlightenment through the Quran aligns with many other authentic supplications in Islam.
