If you want to Learn How to Read Quran, so, you’re in great need to read this article, as it will guide you and help you to study this journey!

1. Learn Quran Reading With A Shaykh (religious teacher)

The original case of learning Quran reading is by something called in Arabic “Mushafaha” or (مشافهة), which means that the Shaykh teaches you face to face. In other words, you can’t learn Quran Reading by only reading in books of Learn Quran Reading.

These books are a helping factor, which means you have to learn Quran Reading by reading it to a Shaykh or Quran teacher in the first place so that the Shaykh teaches you the correct pronunciation and corrects you if you make any mistakes.

After considering this fact, you will not be surprised if you know that this is how the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, learned the Quran!

The original case of learning in Islam is listening verbally to Shaykh or scholar face to face. The one who just studies books without listening to scholars, he will not be considered as a holder of true knowledge!

In this context, one of the most Arabic common sayings here is:

‘.مَنْ يَـأخُذِ العلم عن شيخٍ مشافهةً … يَـكُـنْ من الزيغِ والتحريفِ في حَرَمِ …
ومن يَـكُنْ آخِـذًا للعلم عن صحف … فعلمه عند أهل العلمِ كَالعَــدَمِ’

Muḥammad Shumunnī – [Nail El-Ibtihaj Bi Tatriz Al-Tibaj P. 524]

This means who is listening verbally to Shaykh or scholar face to face, he is far away from getting wrong information or knowledge. However, who is just studying from books, will not be considered as a holder of true knowledge!

Thus, this is the general case of learning in Islam, when it comes to learning Quran reading, we find that Tajweed scholars considered this as a deep-rooted principle. This principle is understood from the following saying:

قال الإمام ابن الجزري رحمه الله تعالى: ولا شك أن الأمة كما هم متعبدون بفهم معاني القرآن وإقامة حدوده متعبدون بتصحيح ألفاظه وإقامة حروفه على الصفة المتلقاة من أئمة القراءة المتصلة بالحضرة النبوية الأفصحية العربية لا تجوز مخالفتها ولا العدول عنها إلى غيرها

Al-Imam al-Gazari – [Al-Nashr fi al-Qira’at al-Ashr P. 210]

This means that there is a unanimous agreement that Quran must be taught in the same way of receiving it from Imam after Imam (Shaykh after Shaykh) up to the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, so that other ways of receiving it are rejected and not accepted.

I hope that the conclusion of this is clear now, which the learning of Quran reading is done by reciting to Shaykh who will teach you and also correct you, and you can’t just depend on the books to learn, but it’s just a helping factor.

2. Listen to the Quran In The Prophet’s (SAW) Way:

The prophet himself received the Quran by hearing Angel Jibril, (as the prophet is not the one Who wrote the Quran, but it’s the Speech of Allah) and then the prophet taught it to the companions, which shows the companions themselves learned by hearing Quran from the prophet, peace be upon him, and the companions learned the successors, and the successors to the successors of the successors, and so on.

We have three issues, and here we want to prove them:
A) The prophet, peace be upon him, was illiterate.
B) The prophet received the Quran from the Angel Gabriel.

The conclusion of this point is proving that the original case of learning Quran Reading is by hearing, not by reading learning books!
