Madd Wajib Muttasil With Examples

madd muttasil meaning, examples, letters, types-50

Madd Wajib Muttasil is one of the most important types of Tajweed elongations (Madd) that every Quran reader must understand. It appears frequently in the Qur’an and directly affects the correct and beautiful recitation of Allah’s words.

In this article, you’ll learn what Madd Wajib Muttasil is, why it is called “wajib,” how many counts to read it with, and several clear examples—including special cases when the hamzah appears at the end of a word.

What Is Madd Wajib Muttasil?

Madd Wajib Muttasil (المد الواجب المتصل) is a sub-type of Madd Far‘i (secondary elongation) whose cause is the presence of a hamzah (ء) after a Madd letter within the same word.

Madd Wajib Muttasil occurs when: A Madd letter (ا – و – ي) is immediately followed by a Hamzah (ء) in the same word.

Why It Is Called “Wajib”

It is called Wajib (obligatory) because all Qur’an reciters agreed that it must be elongated more than two counts.
It is called Muttasil (connected) because the Madd letter and the Hamzah appear together in one word, not separated into two words.

How Many Counts حركات Is Madd Wajib Muttasil?

According to Hafs ‘an ‘Asim (from Ash-Shatibiyyah):

  • The Madd is read for 4 or 5 counts حركات,
  • And 4 counts is the most common and widely taught.

Below are clear, authentic examples of Madd Wajib Muttasil in different forms.
