1- Introduction
Welcome to the first episode of “Learn Quran Reading” course. If you are one of Non-native Arabic Speakers Muslims and want to learn Quran Reading from A to Z, or starting from learning Arabic Alphabet until you will be able to read Quran properly and correctly as it was revealed to the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, you are in the right place!

2- Explanation
About this Learn Quran Reading book (Al-Menhaj).
The first thing we will start with is the Cover Page:
If you took a look at the cover page, you could get 7 important points, which are the following:
1- The book name. The book has a short name and a long name.
A) Its short name is (المنهاج), which is transliterated to Al-Menhaj. This Arabic word literally means the systematic approach, the methodology, or the clear way. When it comes to the field of learning, it might have the meaning of the “curriculum”.
B) If you understand this short name, you can guess now its long name, as its long name just clarifies this word (المنهاج). Its long name therefore is منهجية علمية لإتقان القراءة العربية
Which is translated to:
A systematic approach to master Arabic Reading.
By the way, this book is called with this name because it’s built on or based on a systemic approach.
2- This series of books are Arabic Reading Books or (القراءة العربية), as there is another series for Tajweed Rules.
3- This book is the first level of the series of Arabic Reading Books, as it included three levels.
This is actually an important point as this book doesn’t include all Arabic reading rules, but it includes about 70% (seventy percent) of the Arabic reading rules. We have just mentioned the reason behind that, which is the systematic approach of this curriculum, so, accordingly, we cannot put all lessons and rules in just one book, because it will be somehow difficult for the learner.

Explanation:
Why learn Arabic Reading?
Before doing anything, you have to ask yourself why you do this thing,
“Why is the most important question”
So, the question now is, why “Why is the most important question”?
This answer is because everything has a reason behind it and if you do not have a reason you will not do it.
For example: if I asked you ‘Why do we eat?’ ‘Why do we sleep?’ ‘Why do we work?’ The answers we would get to these questions would be similar. ‘I eat to live.’ ‘I sleep to rest.’ ‘I work to support myself and my family.’
So, why learn Arabic reading?
As a Muslim, one of the most important reasons behind learning Arabic reading is to be able to read Quran.
Reading Qur’an in itself is an act of worship and reading it properly without mistakes has many virtues.
That’s Leads us to Important Questions, which are the following:
1- What does “Qur’an” mean (Linguistically and technically)?
2- What is the relationship between Qur’an and Arabic?
3- Is learning Arabic Reading sufficient to read Qur’an?
Let’s move to the first point which is “What does “Qur’an” mean?”. You might ask “What is the relevance of this question here?”. Keep this question in your mind and you will get the answer soon.
When it comes to the meaning of the Quran, we have to consider the Linguistic meaning and the Islamic meaning.
“Linguistic meaning” term means the meaning of this word before using it in a specifc field or knowledge, which is Islam here.
So, this word linguistically comes from an Arabic word (قَرَأَ), which means ‘to read or to recite.’ This is according to the most popular opinion, and the opinion held by at-Tabaree.
According to Islamic meaning the word Qur’an means:
The Arabic Speech of Allaah, which He revealed to Muhammad, peace be upon him,
كلامُ اللهِ تعالى المُنزَّل على نبيه مُحمَّدٍ صلى الله عليه وسلم
and is miraculous in its words and meanings,
، المُعْجِز بلفْظه ومعناه
reciting it is an act of worship,
المُتعبَّدُ بتلاوته
and has reached us by continuous oral and written transmissions,
المنقول إلينا بالتواتر
and which has been preserved in the mushafs,
، المكتوب في المصاحف من أَوَّلِ سورة الفاتحة إلى آخِرِ سورة الناس
and challenging with its shortest Sura.
المتحدَّى بأقصرِ سورةٍ منه
Understanding this definition will help us to understand the next point, which is “What is the relationship between Qur’an and Arabic?”
If we took a look at the first part of the definition of the Quran, we will find that it says: ‘The Qur’an is the Arabic speech…’. This sentence implies that the Qur’an is in the Arabic language. And therefore, implies that a translation of the Qur’an into any other language cannot be considered the Qur’an.
Here, Imaam az-Zarkashee said:
“Know that the Qur’an has been revealed in the language of the Arabs. Therefore, it is impermissible to recite it in any other language.”
There are eleven references in the Qur’an that it is in the Arabic language, amongst them the following verses:
وَهَٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِيّٞ مُّبِينٌ١٠٣
<<…this (the Qur’an) is in a clear Arabic tongues>> [16:103]
إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَٰنًا عَرَبِيّٗا
<<Verily, We have revealed this as an Arabic Qur’an>> [12:2]
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِيّٗا
<<And thus We have inspired you with an Arabic Qur’an>> [42:7]
Since the Qur’an has described itself as being in Arabic, it is clear that any non- Arabic speech cannot be the Qur’an.

After knowing the meaning of the Quran which helped us to understand the relationship between Quran and Arabic that demands learning Arabic reading, now, there is an important and logical question, which is:
“Is learning Arabic Reading sufficient to read Qur’an?“
We want first to clarify something to answer this question, which is Reading Qur’an correctly requires the knowledge of certain rules, We can divide these rules into two classifications:
1- Arabic Reading Rules.
And
2- Tajweed Rules.
Arabic Reading Rules are the rules that are applied in any Arabic text whether the Qur’anic text or another one.
Tajweed rules, however, are the rules that are just applied when we read Qur’an, not in any Arabic text.
Therefore, Knowing Tajweed rules demands knowing Arabic reading rules first as Tajweed rules are based on Arabic reading rules.
And the conclusion is that Learning Arabic reading is not sufficient to read Qur’an properly but it’s the first step.
Let’s read this example:
There is an Arabic rule is called “Al-Mad” which means lengthening the time of sound of the letter for two counts. If you find any Arabic letter followed by Mad in any Arabic text (whether in the Qur’an or another one), you will apply this rule.
However, there is Tajweed rule is called “Al-Mad al-Muttasil” which means lengthening the time of sound of the letter for four or five counts, this rule is just applied when just reading Qur’an, not in any Arabic text.
For example:
If we have ميم with fathah, we will say مَ, but if we added Alif to it, it will be مَا. What we applied now is called Al-Mad. For example, the word: ماء, which means water. This alif in this word (ماء) is lengthened for just two counts.
If we read this example in the Quran, it will become “ماء”, This alif in this word (ماء) is lengthened for four counts. We applied this additional rule because we just read Quran, but if we read it in any other Arabic book, we will not apply it.

In the last episode, we understand the relationship between Quran and Arabic Reading. Then, it makes sense to discover the following points in this class, which is:
By the end of this episode, you will understand these points 100% and the idea of reading Arabic!
Explanation:
How to read Arabic?
The idea of reading Arabic is so simple, as it just consists of two components or two integral parts. The first component is the Arabic Alphabet Letters, which means that to be able to read any Arabic word, you have first to figure out its Arabic letters.
Surprise: one of the most important points that made reading Arabic easy is that Arabic is a Phonetic Language!
Basically, if there is a relationship between the spelling of a word and its pronunciation, this means that this language is Phonetic, whereas if there is no relationship, this means that language is non-phonetic.
Arabic is a phonetic language which means you can look at a written word and know how to pronounce it, or in short words, Written = Spoken.
As English has words whose pronunciation and spelling do not match, it’s considered a Non-Phonetic Language. As the English alphabet has 26 letters and these 26 letters can make 44 different sounds or phonemes, we might find that one letter represents many sounds, which is not found in Arabic!
As we said that Arabic Reading consists of two components or two integral parts, and we said that the first component or integral part is the letters. The next logical question is:
If you want to Learn Noorani Qaida Online Course, Quranic Arabic Course, or Nour al bayan, we can provide you with a highly qualified Noorani Qaida teacher online, Get your Free Trial Class Now!
Is Knowing Arabic Reading sufficient to read Arabic?
Arabic Alphabet letters have many ways of pronunciation. For example, any Arabic letter might be pronounced while you are opening your mouth, dropping your jaw, or rounding your lips and there are also some other ways or cases. Therefore, the question is:
How can we know these different ways of pronunciation?
This is actually the role of the symbols. So, these symbols are written above or below the Arabic letter as a sign to guide you in which way you will pronounce this letter. We will clarify this point further later Insha’allah.

In the next episode, we will answer important questions, such as “Why learning Arabic Reading?” and “What is the relationship between Quran and Arabic Reading?”. If you want to follow up, consider subscribing.
