The Holy Quran is the book revealed to the Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him. It is a miracle that Muslims have been reading it for more than 1400 years. You may wonder how the Quran has reached us after thousands of years and who wrote this Holy book.
In this article, we will discuss the answers.
Who wrote the Quran?
The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, by the angel Gabriel, peace be upon him. The angel came to the Prophet to deliver portions of it, as the Quran was not revealed all at once; it took around 23 years for the entire Quran to be revealed.
It is a miracle, as Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, was not schooled in reading or writing. In the Quran, Allah said:
﴿ وَمَا كُنتَ تَتْلُو مِن قَبْلِهِ مِن كِتَابٍ وَلَا تَخُطُّهُ بِيَمِينِكَ ۖ إِذًا لَّارْتَابَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ﴾
This means:
Neither did you ( O Muhammad ( saas ) ) read any book before it ( this Qur’ân ), nor did you write any book ( whatsoever ) with your right hand. In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted.
First, Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, forbade writing anything other than the Quran, including his own words, to prevent any confusion between the Quran and other statements. This ensured that the Quran was preserved without any additions or omissions.
Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, called his companions to write it down. They wrote it on different materials like the bark of trees, flat stones, and similar materials, as there was no paper then.
After the death of Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, all these materials were collected and rewritten into the text of the Quran as we read it now.

Who wrote the Quran for Mohammad?
Allah, the Almighty, revealed the Quran. It is impossible to assume that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was its author, as he was incapable of reading or writing.
1. Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him incapable of reading or writing
There is a word in Arabic that expresses this: the word (ummi), which refers to a person who cannot read or write.
In the Quran, Allah Said:
﴿ هُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا مِن قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ﴾
This means:
He is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger ( Muhammad ( saas ) ) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them ( from the filth of disbelief and polytheism ), and teaching them the Book ( this Qur’ân, Islâmic laws and Islâmic jurisprudence ) and Al-Hikmah ( As- Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship of Prophet Muhammad ( saas ) ). And verily, they had been before in manifest error
2. Prophet Mohammed has grown up in Mecca
The Quran was revealed to him when he was almost 40 years old. This occurred in front of all the people living there. At that time, Mecca was a small town, and they had observed him throughout his life. They were all certain that he could neither read nor write.
3. Quran was revealed to the heart of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him
It is also important to mention that the Quran was revealed to the heart of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, as mentioned in the Holy Quran:
﴿ وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (192) نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ (193) عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ (194) بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُّبِينٍ (195) وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي زُبُرِ الْأَوَّلِينَ (196)﴾Sura Al-Shu’ara
This means:
And truly, this ( the Qur’ân ) is a revelation from the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn ( mankind, jinn and all that exists), Which the trustworthy Rûh [ Jibrîl ( Gabriel ) ] has brought down, Upon your heart ( O Muhammad ( saas ) ) that you may be ( one ) of the warners ,In the plain Arabic language, And verily, it ( the Qur’ân, and its revelation to Prophet Muhammad ( saas ) ) is ( announced ) in the Scriptures [ i.e. the Taurât ( Torah ) and the Injeel ( Gospel ) ] of former people.
