Wudu and How It Relates to Reciting the Quran

We have to know the precepts of the major impurity and the minor impurity to understand their relation to wudu and therefore their relation to reciting the Quran.

1. Major Impurity

The term of the “Major Impurity” is meant to have one of the following occurrences; Janabah, Menstruation, Puerperium or Wet dreams. Ghusl (washing the whole body) is a must to purify any state of the major impurity.

So, in any case of the above-mentioned cases, each muslim or Muslimah has to perform ghusl before touching Allah’s Book “Al-Mushaf Ash-sharif” before reading the Holy Quran. It is permissible for those who have one item of major impurity to read the Holy Quran silently from their memories.

2. Minor Impurity

Minor Impurity is a body occurrence such as urination, bowel movements, passing stomach gas, defecating or taking a whiz.

Ablution “Wudu” must be performed to purify any kind of the minor impurities. Wudu can also be done naturally although there are not any of the minor impurities mentioned above. Visit Shaykhi Academy’s Islamic Studies Online Course for more details about this doctrinal point.

Can I Recite the Holy Quran Without Wudu?

To answer this question, we have to know the different rulings for reciting the Holy Quran from memory, from Al-Mus-haf Ash-sharif or by using an electronic device. In the following lines, we’ll cast some light on the various rulings of reciting the Holy Quran. Keep reading

1. Reciting the Holy Quran Without Wudu from Al-Mushaf Ash-sharif

The majority of the Islamic scholars, besides the four great jurists, stated that it is a must to perform wudu before reading the Holy Quran from Al-Mus-haf Ash-sharif.

A state of purity is a mandatory condition in order to touch Allah’s book “Al-Mus-haf Ash-sharif”. The jurists built their advisory opinion upon the following hadith: “No one should touch the Quran but one who is pure.” Narrated Abu Huraira.

Impermissibility Evidence of Reciting the Quran from Al-Mushaf Without Wudu

Here is the evidence that was mentioned in both the Holy Quran and the prophetic reports “Sunnah An-Nabawiyah”: –

A. Untouchable Except for the Purified

Allah said, “It is a noble Quran. In a well-protected book. None can grasp it except the purified.” Surah Al-Waqi‘ah 77:79

“إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ. فِي كِتَابٍ مَكْنُون. لَا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ.”

The word (ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ / The purified) that was mentioned in the above Quranic verse means human beings not the angles as the majority of Islamic jurists stated.

Accordingly, the word “The purified” refers to those who are devoid of major impurity or minor impurity.

B. Hadith of the Quran and the Purity

Malik said, “No-one should carry the Qur’an by its strap, or on a cushion, unless he is pure. If it were permissible to do so, it would also have been permissible to carry it in its cover. This is not because there is something on the hands of the one who carries it by which the Qur’an will be soiled, but because it is disapproved of for someone to carry the Qur’an without being pure out of respect for the Qur’an, and in order to honour it.” reference, Book 15, Hadith 473.

According to this Hadith, performing wudu or tayammum (wiping hands and face with soil in case of the unavailability of water) is an obligatory act before reading the Holy Quran. The Prophet (PBUH) advised not to touch the Quran without purification. Check more Hadiths about this topic on Sunnah. Com

2. Reciting the Holy Quran Without Wudu from Memory

The majority of the Islamic scholars agreed that, ablution “Wudu” is not an obligatory act for reciting the Holy Quran from one’s memory. It is only desirable to perform wudu before reciting the Holy Quran from memory.

Important notes:

■ It is permissible for anyone to read the Holy Quran from their memories even if they had commanded one of the minor impurities, then they only cleaned up but they didn’t perform wudu.

■ It is best to perform wudu before reciting the Quran from your memory, because this shows one’s respect and reverence for the speech of Allah.

■ To sum up, reciting the Holy Quran from memory without wudu is allowable.

3. Reciting the Holy Quran Without Wudu from Electronic Devices

The mobile phones, laptops, tablets, or computers in which Quran is displayed or recorded do not have the same ruling as the ruling of reading or reciting the Holy Quran from the book of Allah “Al-MushafAsh-sharif”.

Accordingly, it is permissible for anyone to use any of the above devices for reading the Holy Quran without performing wudu.

Moreover, it is permissible for someone to enter the bathroom carrying or holding one of these devices, because the written text of the Holy Quran on these devices is not as the written text in Al-MushafAsh-Sharif.

The Islamic scholars built their opinion upon the fact that these devices spread electronic waves that appear and disappear on the screen; the alphabetic letters are not unwavering. Besides, these devices do not only display the text of the Holy Quran, rather they display content of various items.
