Can You Recite Ayatul Kursi in Salah?

Recite Ayatul Kursi in Salah

Many of us wonder what is the sufficient amount that should be recited after Surah Al-Fatihah in prayer? Is it a complete Surah or is it sufficient to recite a number of verses or is one verse sufficient for that? In this article we will answer this question.

Can You Recite Ayatul kursi in Salah?

Yes, it is permissible to recite Ayat al-Kursi in any of the first two rakaahs of prayer, as it is a long verse with complete meaning and ruling. Ayat al-Kursi is also part of the Quran, and Allah the Almighty said:

“فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ”

“So recite what is easy of the Quran”

Meaning Allah did not specify a specific surah or a specific verse, and from here it is permissible to recite Ayat al-Kursi after Surat al-Fatihah.

But there is a way to read Ayat al-Kursi in prayer and conditions that must be known…

Is Al-Fatihah Sufficient to the Validity of Salah?

Yes, reciting Surat Al-Fatihah is sufficient for the validity of the Salah, and reciting a surah after Al-Fatihah in the first two rakaahs of the prayer is recommended, not obligatory, according to the majority of scholars.

Reciting Al-Fatihah is an essential pillar in every rakaah of the prayer, and the prayer is not valid without it, based on the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

“Whoever prays a prayer in which he does not recite the Mother of the Qur’an, it is incomplete”

(narrated by Al-Bukhaari, hadeeth no. 756, and Muslim, hadeeth no. 394).

“من صلى صلاة لم يقرأ فيها بأمِّ القرآن فهي خِداج”

(رواه البخاري، حديث رقم 756، ومسلم، حديث رقم 394)

Based on this, the opinion of the majority (Shafi’is, Hanbalis, and some Malikis) is that reciting Al-Fatihah is an essential obligation in every rakaah of the prayer, whether it is an obligatory or voluntary prayer. If the worshipper intentionally omits it or is able to recite it but does not, then his prayer is invalid.

But because Islam is a religion of ease, it has made an exception for those who cannot recite Al-Fatihah, such as a new Muslim or someone who has an inability to pronounce its letters. The scholars agreed that it is sufficient for him to recite other verses from the Qur’an, or to repeat supplications such as: “Glory be to God, praise be to God, there is no god but God, God is Great.”

What Is the Minimum That Is Sufficient to Recite After Al-Fatiha in Prayer (Salah)?

The minimum number of verses that must be recited in the first two rakaahs after Surah Al-Fatihah for the prayer to be valid is one verse with a complete meaning or ruling. Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, preferred that it be a long verse.

Al-Buhuti, may Allah have mercy on him, said in “Kashaf Al-Qinaa'”: “It appears that it is not sufficient to recite a verse that has no meaning or ruling if it is read alone.

From here, one question may come to your mind: Is Ayatul Kursi considered a long verse with a complete meaning or ruling?

Let us answer you now…

How to Recite Ayatul Kursi in Salah?

If you read Ayat Al-Kusi in the first rakaah after finishing Surat Al-Fatihah, then this is permissible as we mentioned, but it controls what you can read in the second rakaah. In this case, a person must read in the second rakaah any verse that comes after Ayat Al-Kursi in order if he is going to read from the same surah, because otherwise it is considered an inversion of verses (tankees Al ayat), which is forbidden and invalidates the prayer.

In the same vein, if you are going to read another surah, you must choose a surah that follows Surat Al-Baqarah and not precedes it, because deliberately reading the Holy Quran from behind is forbidden, such as reading a surah in the first rakaah, then reading in the second rakaah a surah that precedes the first, which is known as inversion in the recitation of surahs.

Conclusion

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi in prayer is permissible as it is a long verse that is unique in meaning and ruling, but one must take into consideration choosing the next surah in the second rak’ah. One must recite a verse following Surat al-Kursi or a surah following Surat al-Baqarah so that there is no reversal. If you are going to recite Ayat al-Kursi in the second rak’ah, one must recite verses that precede it in the first rak’ah or a surah that precedes Surat al-Baqarah in the first rak’ah.
