For any Muslim, whether man or woman, worship is essential daily. Reading the Quran is one of the methods to be rewarded in the hereafter and to bring calmness and peace into their life.
However, there are certain days in every woman’s life during menstruation when she must stop praying (salah) and fasting.
What should she do regarding reading or learning the Quran? This is what we will discuss in this article.
Can I learn the Quran while on my period?
Yes, during your period, you can recite and learn the Quran. You can read it from memory or recite it using digital devices such as smartphones, computers, and tablets. You can also read a Tafseer book, which not only contains the Quran but includes an explanation of its verses, or read a translation of the Quran.
You should know that reading or reciting involves moving your tongue or lips while reading. However, reading silently using only your eyes is not considered reading in this context.
However, touching a physical Quran is prohibited.
Can you go to a Quran class during your period?
Yes, you can attend Quran classes during your period to study or revise. You can listen to the lesson or repeat it. You can also use a Tafseer book, as it is not considered the physical Quran. Additionally, you can wear gloves if you wish to touch the Quran, but touching the physical Quran without a barrier is prohibited.
Can I go to a masjid Quran class during the period?
The answer is no, you can’t go to the masjid to attend Quran classes during the period as it is prohibited.
Aisha said:
The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said to me; Get me the mat from the mosque. I said ; I am menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) then replied: Your menstruation is not in your hand.

What is not allowed during menstruation in Islam?
As a Muslim woman, it is important to understand that we worship Allah by obeying His commands. You should also know that Allah, who created us, is aware of the challenges women face during this period. Out of His mercy, He has exempted women from certain acts of worship.
During menstruation, there are specific restrictions that should be observed. We will outline them below:
1. A woman must not perform any prayers
Whether obligatory (the five daily prayers) or voluntary (Sunnah), as all forms of prayer are prohibited during menstruation.
2. It is not allowed to touch or hold the physical Quran directly
However, it is permissible to touch it while wearing gloves or using a barrier, or by using digital devices. Additionally, one may read from a Tafseer book.
3. A Woman must not fast
Whether it is an obligatory fast (such as Ramadan fasting) or a voluntary fast (such as Sunnah fasting). However, she is required to make up the obligatory fasts missed during her menses before the next Ramadan.
Aisha may Allah pleased with her said:
“كان يصيبنا ذلك على عهد النبي ﷺ فنؤمر بقضاء الصوم، ولا نؤمر بقضاء الصلاة”
This means:
we were commanded to make up fasts but we were not commanded to make up prayers.” (Agreed upon)
4. It is prohibited to perform Tawaf around the Kaaba
Whether obligatory or voluntary, but she could do every act of worship like stay in Arafat or make sai between Safa and Marwa as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
“افعلي ما يفعله الحاج، غير ألا تطوفي بالبيت حتى تطهري”
This means:
“Do everything that the pilgrims do, but do not circumambulate the House until you become pure.”
5. It is prohibited to stay in the masjed
As it isn’t allowed to walk or stay inside the masjid during menstruation, she can pass anything to another person inside the masjid by hand
6. It is prohibited to have intercourse with her husband during menstruation
However, everything else that meets the husband’s desire is allowed,as long as it does not involve intercourse.
Allah Says:
This means:
And they ask you about menstruation. Say, “It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”
