Rules of Makeup In Islam:

The first general rule is that modesty is a core value in Islam. Therefore, Islam prohibits women from showing their adornment in front of non-mahram men. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala specified “Maharem” in verse 31 in Surah An-Nur

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears.Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O  believers, so that you may be successful.”

The second rule is that any kind of makeup or cosmetic intervention that causes permanent alteration in one’s physical appearance is forbidden in Islam. This applies To Ramadan as well as any other time of the year.

The third important rule is that any kind of makeup that is made of non-Halal ingredients such as pork derivatives is non-permissible in Islam whether during Ramadan or any other time.

Let us now answer some questions related to the usage of makeup during the sacred month of Ramadan.

Can you wear makeup during Ramadan?

Yes, you can wear makeup during Ramadan under certain conditions. These conditions are:

  • Ensuring that the product is not swallowed.
  • Putting on makeup in Ramadan should be limited to the persons within your household such as your husband, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, fathers, and mothers.
  • All cosmetic interventions that are meant to cause a permanent change in your body are not allowed in Islam.
  • You should ensure that the makeup is made of Halal substances.

Can you wear lashes during Ramadan?

No, wearing false eyelashes is considered a sort of hair extension which is forbidden in Islam during Ramadan as well as at any other time.

According to the Hadith narrated that Asma bint Abi Bakr said: “A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have a daughter who is newly married, and she had the measles and her hair fell out. Can I give her hair extensions?” He said: “Allah has cursed the one who fixes hair extensions and the one who has that done.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim (2122))

Is it haram to wear Mascara while fasting?

No, it is not Haram to use mascara while fasting since it is applied externally on the eyelashes and does not reach the stomach. Which means it does not break your fast. Provided it is only used in front of females or Mahram males.

Is lipstick halal in Ramadan?

Yes, putting on lipstick and lip moisturizers, during the daytime of Ramadan is allowed only in case you are sure that it will not by any means reach your stomach.

Can you use lip balm during Ramadan?

Yes, you can use lip balm during Ramadan. Since all kinds of cosmetics that are externally applied to the skin or hair for beautification, moisturizing or any other purpose are considered Halal to use during the daytime of Ramadan as long as you do not swallow them.

Can you use chapstick during Ramadan?

Yes, it is allowed to use Chapstick during Ramadan, provided that you do not swallow it the same applies for all other lip products that are only used externally.

Can you put on nail polish, acrylic nails and press on nails during Ramadan?

Putting on nail polish or fake nails during Ramadan does not break your fast. However, Nail polish and fake nails can prevent water from reaching your nails during ablution. So, you must remove them before making wudu’ or ghusl otherwise your prayers will not be valid.

Another concern here is that having long nails goes against the five acts of “fitra”, As Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, “There are five acts which conform to the pure nature: Circumcision, removing of the pubic hair, clipping the nails, plucking the underarm hair and trimming the moustache.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Can you wear Eyeliner while fasting?

Yes, it is generally allowed to wear eyeliner (Kohl), eyeshadow, or mascara while fasting, since they are used externally without reaching the stomach which means they have no effect on your fast.

Can you wear Perfume during Ramadan?

Yes, wearing perfume during Ramadan is allowed. However, scholars have different opinions regarding the inhalation of incense (such as oud). Some Muslim scholars see that it is disliked while others consider it Haram as it may contain particles that can reach the stomach which invalidates the fast.

It should be noted that Muslim women are not allowed to put on perfume outside their houses. This could be understood from the hadith of prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him “The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: ‘Any woman who puts on perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance then she is an adulteress.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i 5126)
