How to Read Quran Correctly?
There are many ways you can follow to learn how to read Quran correctly with Tajweed. One of these ways is what is called “التلقي” or “Receiving directly”, from the experts in Qur’anic recitation. For the reason that receiving the Quran from a qualified sheikh is one of the ideal ways to learn how to read the Holy Quran correctly, where the learner listens to his correct recitation and reads after him so that the sheikh can check their intonation and recitation.
“فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ
— Surah Al-Qiama (18)
So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.”.
It is important to keep in mind that receiving and Mushafaha (verbally teaching) are needed to teach accurate Qur’anic reading, Because the Holy Quran was verbally revealed to the Prophet peace be upon him through Gabriel Alayhi-Assalam
So, It is important to acquire that knowledge orally from a sheikh or a scholar in order to reap the benefits of learning the accurate recitation of the Quran, as they cannot be obtained by only reading from the Mus-haf. And whoever studies the science of Quran recitation will understand the truth of that knowledge, will understand that it can only come from the tongue of sheikhs and reciters who are identified by their excellence of recitation and that the learner can only achieve these things by receiving.
One of the ways that doesn’t really include the receiving or Mushafaha is to listen to audio-visual Tajweed lectures and episodes, or read the Quran along with the teaching Quran (المصحف المعلم), or reading the Quran to a sheikh electronically (online)
The Quran’s intonation science has been extensively studied by Muslim scholars, and some of the earliest books that dealt with explaining this science include:
- aleayn lilkhalil (العين للخليل)
- sybwyh (سيبويه)

The students of Abdullah bin Masoud, including Ibrahim bin Yazid bin Qais Al-Nakh’i and Al-Aswad bin Yazid bin Qais Al-Nakh’i, were eager to learn how to read the Quran correctly on the recitation of Ibn Masoud so that they would agree with the Prophet’s reading.
