Learn Quran by Heart – Best Ways And Benefits

best way to learn quran by heart

Learning Quran by heart is a goal that every Muslim seeks, as it is a continuous and uninterrupted connection with God and the noble words of Allah all the time and without the need for a place or tools.

Although it may seem difficult, especially for beginners, with diligence and focus, progress in it is a guaranteed result.

In this article, we will help you start this journey in memorizing the Holy Quran by heart and we will guide you on the best way to do so while you are at home!

What does it mean to learn the Quran by heart?

To learn Quran by heart means being able to recite the entire Quran without having to look at the written text (the Quran). This includes not only memorizing the verses but also the correct pronunciation, pauses, and rules of Tajweed. This is what the title “Hafiz” for males and “Hafiza” for females refers to. The term “by heart” indicates deep and precise memorization as if the verses have been stuck in the heart and mind and can be retrieved effortlessly as if you were speaking your daily conversation.

Benefits of Learning Quran by Heart

In addition to the great moral value of memorizing the Holy Quran for every Muslim, learning the Quran by heart has many benefits. Let us mention some of them:

1. It Makes You one of the People of Allah and His Companions

The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “Allah has people among mankind, and the people of the Quran are the people of Allah and His chosen ones.”

What a great honor!!

This is certainly something we all strive for, so this is a gift and honor for those who learn the Quran by heart.

2. It Saves You from the Hellfire

Just reading and reciting the Quran will save you from the Fire on the Day of Judgment, so what about memorizing it in your heart and repeating it constantly?

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “If the Quran was collected in a vessel (heart), Allah would not punish him with the Fire.”

3. It increases your good deeds

It was narrated from Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will receive a good deed for it, and a good deed is multiplied by ten like it. I do not say that “Alif Lam Meem ألم” is a letter, but “Alif أ is a letter”, “Lam ل is a letter” “Meem م is a letter” [Tirmidhi]

So memorizing and reciting the Quran is one of the best ways to get countless good deeds.

4. Protects you from the temptation of Dajjal

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) gave descriptions and warnings about the Dajjal to prepare his followers. He emphasized the importance of knowing the Quran and understanding its teachings to protect against the deception of the Dajjal.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.”

5. Enjoy high ranks in Paradise

The memorizers of the Holy Quran will be among the highest ranks of the people of Paradise on the Day of Judgment and they will be told, as our Prophet (PBUH) said: “The companion of the Quran will be told on the Day of Judgment: Recite and ascend as you used to recite in the world, for your rank will be the last verse you recite.” (Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi)

6. Be in the company of the angels

Whoever memorizes the Holy Quran will enjoy being among the honorable angels in Paradise.

On the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The one who is skilled in reciting the Qur’an will be with the noble and righteous scribes. The one who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite it, and strives to recite it in the best way, will have two rewards.” [Bukhari and Muslim].

7. You will receive intercession on the Day of Judgment

The Qur’an will come on the Day of Judgment as an intercessor for its memorizer, and this is what our noble Messenger emphasized.

8. It relieves you of depression and stress

The Qur’an is the best psychological treatment, as Allah the Almighty says in Surah Yunus, verse 57:

O humanity! Indeed, there has come to you a warning from your Lord, a cure for what is in the hearts, a guide, and a mercy for the believers.

The Qur’an takes you away from people and their problems and what hurts you from them sometimes and places you with Allah, so you do not feel the hardship of separation and your soul does not suffer from loss.

9. Improve your memory

This is a great benefit, especially if you suffer from weak memory. Memorizing the Holy Quran and practicing remembering it helps improve your memory abilities and makes your memory better.

10. Its honor is reflected on your parents

If they help you memorize it, Allah has promised to make it an honor for them on the Day of Resurrection. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever recites the Quran, learns it, and then acts upon it, will be adorned on the Day of Resurrection with a crown of light whose light is like the brightness of the sun, and his parents will be adorned with two jewels that the world cannot contain. They will say: What is the matter with us that we are adorned with? It will be said: Because of what you taught your son of the Quran.”

11. You are preceded in prayer as an imam

The one who has memorized the Holy Quran has an advantage over others, and this is what we learned from Abu Masoud Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: The one who leads the people in prayer is the one who has the most knowledge of the Book of Allah. If they are equal in knowledge of the Quran, then the one who has the most knowledge of the Sunnah. If they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then the one who emigrated first. If they are equal in emigrating, then the one who has the most peace. A man should not lead another man in prayer when he is in authority, nor should he sit in his house in his honor except with his permission. Narrated by Muslim (673).

12. You are preceded in the grave in the direction of the Qiblah

If you are going to be buried with others, and this is understood from the hadith of the Prophet when he was burying two of the martyrs of Uhud, then the following happened: On the authority of Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would gather the two men killed at Uhud in one garment and then say: Which of them had the most knowledge of the Quran? If one of them was pointed out to him, he would put him in the grave and say: I will be a witness over these people on the Day of Resurrection. He ordered them to be buried in their blood, and they were not washed and no funeral prayer was performed over them. Narrated by Al-Bukhari (1278).

Best Way to Learn Quran by Heart:

There are many ways to do this. Now I will tell you about the best ways to memorize Quran by heart:

1. Dividing the Surahs into parts

This method is very effective, especially in the case of long Surahs. Dividing the Surahs into parts and memorizing each part separately increases your speed in memorization and helps you master each part sufficiently.

As you progress in memorizing the Qur’an, connect the parts. Read the Surah from the beginning and continue reading until the last place you memorized. This ensures that you memorize the new while remembering the old.

2- Create an environment suitable for memorization

The environment in which you memorize may be the most important way to memorize because it increases your focus and makes memorization easier. Make sure to ensure memorization in a quiet place and remove any unnecessary items, papers or things that may distract you, and reduce all distractions, i.e. silence your phone to avoid interruptions. Choose a quiet area away from noisy activities or areas with heavy traffic in your home and make this place your fixed place for memorization. This is an effective way to improve memory.

3. Make a memorization plan

First, you should start by setting your memorization goals, then identify the surahs or verses you want to start memorizing, and set a realistic timetable for achieving the goal.

Determine the number of pages, sections, or verses you aim to memorize daily or weekly. Allocate specific time periods for memorization sessions, taking into account your other commitments and responsibilities. The most important thing is to check your progress regularly and make sure you stay on track.

4. Recite the Surahs you have memorized in prayer

Regular recitation of the Surahs you have memorized during your prayers involves constant repetition, which is crucial for consolidating your memorization and increasing your knowledge of the verses. The more you recite the Surahs in worship, the more firmly they will become embedded in your memory.

Whenever you finish a surah, make sure to start reciting it during your daily prayers. However, strive to maintain focus, correct pronunciation, and understanding of the verses. If you make any mistakes, check them and try to correct them later.

5- Join an Online Quran Memorization Course

It is one of the effective ways to memorize the Holy Quran because it guarantees you follow-up with a specialized teacher and guarantees you correct pronunciation and periodic review.

6- Memorize verses like a thread

Use the division technique to divide the thread into smaller sections. Instead of trying to memorize the entire line at once, focus on learning a few verses at a time. Once you have learned these verses, add the next section and gradually connect the sections until you have memorized the entire thread.

One way that can help you memorize easier is to look for keywords or phrases that link the verses. These words can be repeated words, similar concepts, or linking phrases. Highlight or write down these keywords or phrases to help you recognize the connections between the verses.

How Long Did It Take You to Learn the Quran by Heart?

The time it takes to memorize the Holy Quran varies from one person to another based on a number of factors, including the individual’s personal abilities and the pace at which he memorizes, but we can say in general that if a person commits to memorizing one page per day, the process may take about 600 days, which is approximately equivalent to a year and 10 months to complete the entire Holy Quran.

Doubling the effort to two pages per day reduces the time significantly, and shortens the time to 300 days or a little less than a year.

However, the matter is not fixed, as the period may be longer or shorter depending on the pace at which you are able to memorize daily.

But there are supporting factors that may speed up the memorization process, such as joining a Quran memorization course from Shaykhi Academy, which helps you develop a memorization plan and continuous reviews.
