1- How to learn Quran Reading? “considering this is important if you want to Learn How to Read Quran :)”

How to learn Quran Reading_ Learn How to Read Quran in Arabic - Complete Guide! - Shaykhi Academy

The original case of learning Quran reading is by something called in Arabic “Mushafaha” or (مشافهة), which means that the Shaykh teaches you face to face. In other words, you can’t learn Quran Reading by only reading in books of Learn Quran Reading. We can consider that these books are a helping factor, which means you have to learn Quran Reading by reading it to Shaykh or Quran teacher in the first place, so that the Shaykh teaches you the correct pronunciation and corrects you if you made any mistakes. After considering this fact, you will not get surprised if you knew that this is how the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, learned the Quran!

1.1- How the prophet, peace be upon him, learned Quran Reading? (Understanding how the prophet received the Quran will help you to know Learn How to Read Quran)

In fact, the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was identified by Quran as al-nabī al-ummī (Q.7:157), which means that he was illiterate and had never been taught to read and all words that issued from his mouth, were given to him by an angel, who received the words from Allah. Then the words were copied down by a group of scribes and compiled into the Quran. By the way, it’s a miracle that an illiterate prophet to say this miraculous speech and proves that these words are the words of Allah!

Thus, the prophet himself received the Quran by hearing Angel Jibril, (as the prophet is not the one Who wrote the Quran, but it’s the Speech of Allah) and then the prophet taught it to the companions, which shows the companions themselves learned by hearing Quran from the prophet, peace be upon him, and the companions learned the successors, and the successors to the successors of the successors, and so on.

We have here three issues we want to prove them:
A) The prophet, peace be upon him, was illiterate.
B) The prophet was received Quran from Angel Gebril.

1.1.1- What is the proof that the prohpet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was Unlettered Prophet or illiterate (al-nabī al-ummī)?

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read not write whom they find written with them in the Tawraat and the Injeel, – he commands them for al-Ma’roof (i.e., Islamic monotheism and all that Islaam has ordained); and forbids them from al-Munkar (i.e., disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islaam has forbidden); he allows them as lawful al-Tayyibaat (i.e., all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.), and prohibits them as unlawful al-khabaa’ith (i.e., all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.), he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allaah’s Covenant) and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who believe in him (Muhammad), honor him, help him and follow the light (the Qur’aan) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful.”

Holy Quran – [al-A’raaf 7:157]

1.1.2- What is the proof that the prohpet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was received Quran from Angel Gebril?

The process of sending down the Quran from Allah to the prophet Muhammad through Angel Gebril is called Revelation. Let’s state the proof of this process of the revelation:

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (should know that) it is he who brings down the Qur’an on your heart by the leave of God, (not of his own accord), confirming (the Divine origin of and the truths still contained in) the Revelations prior to it, and (serving as) guidance and glad tidings for the believers.’

Holy Quran – [Baqara 2:97]

(Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (should know that) it is he who brings down the Qur’an on your heart) means, whoever becomes an enemy of Jibril, let him know that he is Ruh Al-Qudus who brought down the Glorious Dhikr (Qur’an) to your heart from Allah by His leave. Hence, he is a messenger from Allah.

1.1.3- If the prophet was illiterate, how the Quran was written?

Prophet will remain unable to write even one line or one letter, until the Day of Resurrection. He had scribes who would write down in front of him the Revelation and letters.

1.1.4- Does it’s considered inappropriate to ascribe the prophet, peace be upon him, illiterate?

ِAbsolutely no. However, it’s considered a miracle. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘. . . In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted.’

Holy Quran – [al-‘Ankaboot 29:48]

i.e., if you had been good at it (reading and writing), some of the ignorant people would have doubted you and said that you had learned this from the previous Books left by the Prophets.

Al-Mawardi said: ‘What is good about the fact that Allaah sent an unlettered Prophet? There are three things:
(i) his message fulfilled the foretelling of the previous Prophets;
(ii) this made him similar to and closer to other Prophets (illiterates);
(iii) this would eliminate all suspicion that he had learned the message he preached from books and writings that he had read.”

All of this is evidence of the miraculous nature and truth of his Prophethood.

The conclusion of this point is proving that the original case of learning Quran Reading is by hearing, not by reading learning books!

1.2- Can you teach yourself to read Quran?

The original case of learning in Islam is listening verbally to Shaykh or scholar face to face. The one who just studies books without listening to scholars, he will not be considered as a holder of true knowledge!

In this context, one of the most Arabic common sayings here is:

‘.مَنْ يَـأخُذِ العلم عن شيخٍ مشافهةً … يَـكُـنْ من الزيغِ والتحريفِ في حَرَمِ …
ومن يَـكُنْ آخِـذًا للعلم عن صحف … فعلمه عند أهل العلمِ كَالعَــدَمِ’

Muḥammad Shumunnī – [Nail El-Ibtihaj Bi Tatriz Al-Tibaj P. 524]

This means who is listening verbally to Shaykh or scholar face to face, he is far away from getting wrong information or knowledge. However, who is just studying from books, will not be considered as a holder of true knowledge!

Thus, this is the general case of learning in Islam, when it comes to learning Quran reading, we find that Tajweed scholars considered this as a deep-rooted principle. This principle is understood from the following saying:

قال الإمام ابن الجزري رحمه الله تعالى: ولا شك أن الأمة كما هم متعبدون بفهم معاني القرآن وإقامة حدوده متعبدون بتصحيح ألفاظه وإقامة حروفه على الصفة المتلقاة من أئمة القراءة المتصلة بالحضرة النبوية الأفصحية العربية لا تجوز مخالفتها ولا العدول عنها إلى غيرها

Al-Imam al-Gazari – [Al-Nashr fi al-Qira’at al-Ashr P. 210]

This means that there is a unanimous agreement that Quran must be taught in the same way of receiving it from Imam after Imam (Shaykh after Shaykh) up to the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, so that other ways of receiving it are rejected and not accepted.

I hope that the conclusion of this is clear now, which the learning of Quran reading is done by reciting to Shaykh who will teach you and also correct you, and you can’t just depend on the books to learn, but it’s just a helping factor.

1.2.1- What are the conditions must be fulfilled of the Shaykh/Quran teacher to teach Quran Reading?

There are some conditions that prove that a teacher is qualified, such as:

1- Reciting to a qualified Shaykh or Quran teacher. (Check our online Quran recitation course)
2- Studying at an authentic Islamic university or institute.
3- His sincerity and good manners.

1.2.2- It’s a condition for the Shaykh to be certified or have Ijaza?

As you have to learn Quran with a qualified teacher, the Shaykh who will teach you himself must also be qualified and the teacher who taught him is qualified. This process is proven by something called “Ijaza” which shows the series of qualified teachers of your teacher or Shaykh until the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
